INTRODUCTION:

Management by Objectives (MBO) was introduced by Peter Drucker in 1954.

 

It is a Two-Way communication. It increases the staff morale. Main focus is on customer care analysis of their needs.

 

DEFINITION OF MBO:

"The superior and subordinate managers of an organization jointly define its common goals, Major areas of responsibility in terms of the results expected of them and use these measures as guides in operating the unit and assessing the contribution of each of its members."

 

 

CRITERIA FOR SETTING OBJECTIVES:

·        Specific

·        Measurable

·        Agreed (relating to the participative management principle)

·        Realistic

·        Time related

 

PRE REQUISITES:

·        Purpose of  MBO

·        Top management support

·        Training

·        Participation

·        Feedback

              

PROCESS OF MBO

 

BENEFITS OF MBO:

·        Effective planning and control

·        Coordination

·        Motivation and commitment

·        Accurate appraisals

·        Executive development

·        Organizational change and development

 

BARRIERS:

·        Time and cost

·        Management is not supportive

·        Inconsistency

·        Goals are easy/unattainable

·        Conflict between goals and policies

·        Lack of commitment

·        Accountability is beyond control of employee

 

CONCLUSION:

MBO is a process that includes planning organization directing controlling and evaluating. If we practice in nursing it will offer an opportunity to do self assessment and set goals that are realistic for career aspirations.
